Nintendo Wii 2 (Project Cafe) is On Its Way!

Nintendo has confirmed that it is preparing for a “2012 launch” of its newest video gaming console, commonly known as the Wii 2, code-named Project Cafe.

In a departure from the current Wii system, the Wii 2 controller will have dual analog sticks and standard d-pad and trigger buttons. Resembling the current Xbox 360 controller, it’s also rumored to feature a six-inch touch-capable screen built right into the controller, for use not only in signaling the game console, but also for streaming entire games to play on the controller device!

It’s been promised that a functioning unit will be available to be played at this year’s E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9 in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, rumors abound for this latest generation gaming system:

  • It will contain an updated version of the AMD R7000 GPU architecture, as will as a triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset that will easily outpower the Xbox 360
  • It will produce 1080p HD output and stereoscopic 3D images
  • It will physically resemble the Xbox 360, having a look that Nintendo refers to as a “modernized SNES.”

In keeping with the Nintendo tradition of code-naming its systems, (Gamecube: Project Dolphin; Wii: Project Revolution), the new Wii 2 is currently code-named “Project Cafe.” A release name has not yet been leaked, but Stream has been rumored to be on the short-list of contenders.

Prepare for a price point in the $350-$400 range, and a holiday-season release date.
