Still Looking for Reasons to Buy a Wii?

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Wii FunAre you STILL on the fence about buying a Wii? Let me give you a few reasons why you should just go ahead and get one!

The Nintendo Wii isn’t your typical video gaming console where everyone just sits around and presses buttons and wiggles joysticks until their hands are sore. It truly does offer fun for the entire family. There are plenty of terrific games to choose from, and they are geared toward all ages and interests. Love the old classic games? You can download them from the Wii Shop Channel and play them using the Wii’s built-in Virtual Console that supports the older games. Still have some old GameCube games lying around? They are compatible with the Wii, so you don’t need to waste space keeping them both hooked up to your T.V.

Speaking of space, the Nintendo Wii is the smallest of all the video gaming consoles. It doesn’t take up much space, so you don’t have to re-arrange all the rest of your electronics to find a spot for it. But even though it’s small, it’s very well-constructed. And if you connect it to your WiFi signal, it will automatically download all the latest available system updates.

Is price a concern? The Wii’s retail price is substantially less than the PS3 and the XBox 360, and it actually comes with more built-in features. (Did you know that if you want to use your 360 with your wireless Internet connection, you need to cough up an extra $100 for the wireless network adapter? Ouch!)

And speaking of costs, I’m sure you’ve read all about how you can download your Wii games for free! If you haven’t, I’ve posted about it a lot… just take a look around the blog. (OK, here’s a link if you don’t want to spend time searching!)

So if you’ve been considering the purchase of a Wii, just do it! Once you have it up and running, you won’t be able to figure out why you waited so long.

Wii Virtual Console for All Your Favorite Classics!

Wii Virtual Console

We all have those old “classic” games that we miss, don’t we? You know, the original titles from the Super NES or the N64. Maybe we can still play new versions of them on our newer systems, but there was just nothing like the old original Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros.

Well folks, get ready to Dig Dug away again, ’cause you can revisit many of those old games using the Wii’s Virtual Console feature! The Virtual Console, combined with the Wii Shop Channel, makes it possible to access lots of your favorite games for  NES, Super NES, N64, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, and more! Ready to get started? Here’s an easy, step-by-step tutorial that will have you playing all your old games in no time!

  1. You will need some Wii Points to download your games. If you don’t currently have any, you can either purchase a Wii Points card from your local video game store or you can use your credit card to buy them on the Wii Shop Channel.
  2. Make sure your Wii can connect to the Internet. If you need help making that happen, you can take a look at my previous article on Wi-Fi for the Wii.
  3. Once you are at the Wii Menu, choose the Wii Shop Channel.
  4. Go to the Virtual Console area and choose the game you would like to download.
  5. Once your download has completed, your new (old!) game will show up in a new channel on your Wii Menu. Click this channel and you’re all ready to get a blast from your past!

The Wii Virtual Console… just one more of the features that make the Wii the best gaming console on the market today. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out!

Game Download Review Site

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Every now and then I like to check and make sure I’m getting the best value for my money. After all, high school students don’t earn that much, so we need to make sure we’re smart about how we spend it. (OMG – I sound like my parents!!) In this case, however, they’re right.

Anyway, I was checking around to see if there’s anything new available for Wii game download sites, and I ran across Reviewer’s Choice Online. Reviewer’s Choice Online is a site that tries to “help you make confident online purchasing decisions” by reviewing categories of products that you can buy online. They look like they are just getting started, as they only have a few categories right now, but one of them is video game downloads. And guess what their favorite site is? You got it, My Wii Downloads… the site use and love!

So, when you’re choosing a site to join for downloading games, make sure to do your homework. Reviewer’s Choice Online is a great place to start, especially if they continue to grow and add more product categories and reviews. Have fun out there!

Remember that Wii Download Site I Hated?

Friday, April 10th, 2009

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about a Wii Download Site to Avoid. I mentioned how they didn’t work for me, and how I’d actually helped a few other people get their money back from them, ’cause they didn’t live up to their promises, and for most people they just plain didn’t work.

Well, if you’re clued in to the goings-on in the Internet Sales world, you may have heard of a company named Clickbank, and their decision to no longer process transactions for sites that sell access to digital media downloads. Let me tell you, that has caused a HUGE shake-up in the online digital entertainment industry, and numerous companies went under this week because of it. And one of them was UnlimitedWiiDownloads dot com!

If you purchased a membership from them, you’re outa luck now, and I feel bad for you. If you joined within the last 8 weeks, you may still be able to get a refund… contact me if you are interested and I’ll try to help.

However, my favorite Wii Download Site has come through the transition with flying colors! They are not only still online and providing service to their members, they are celebrating by offering $10 off their Platinum Lifetime Membership ($5 off the Silver 1-year membership). So, there’s never been a better time to join and get your Wii downloads free. Hop on over and check them out!
